CENTER FOR HEALTH
The Genome Research Center for Health (CRGS), stemming from the GENOMAeSALUTE project within the Campania Region’s Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialization Program: “Campania fight against cancer”, is the first high-capacity research and development infrastructure in Southern Italy focusing on genomics research and translational bioinformatics for health, with a special emphasis on oncology and precision medicine. Located at the University of Salerno’s medical campus in Baronissi (SA), the Center is empowered with technological capability for high-throughput genomic data generation and the computational potential for genomic and biomedical data analysis and storage, conceived to make possible large- and mid-scale genomics and precision medicine projects both nationally and internationally. The Center is supported by national and international funding agencies and industrial partners, and is open to scientific, technological and industrial collaborations in its fields of interest.
Genomics and Precision Medicine aim at expanding our current knowledge on the spectrum of genome alterations characterizing human diseases, discovering new effective treatment strategies and offering to individual patients the right medical care at the right time by taking their genes, lifestyle and environment into account.
The CRGS is a highly innovative genomic center focused on developing Precision Medicine providing advanced integrated research services and training, thanks to the availability of the latest generation technologies, combined to scientific and technical expertise in Genomic, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and AI and other ‘big data’ analysis technologies.
Personalized genomic information represents a powerful tool in biomedicine and, in general, in all fields of interest for human health, including Preventive Medicine through the development of disease biomarkers for early diagnosis and implementation targeted therapies for the patient.
The funding members of the CRGS include Universities, PMIs and industrial groups of the health sector, all active in research and development in the fields of therapeutics, diagnostics and bioinformatics for human health. The reasons for this partnership reside in the drive to foster research and innovation in Genomics, Bioinformatics and big data analysis, in order to bring back the results to the public and private health sectors.
The founding partnership of CRGS includes:
Università degli Studi di Salerno (UNISA)
Dipartimento di Medicina, Chirurgia e Odontoiatria
‘Scuola Medica Salernitana’ (DIPMED)
Università degli Studi del Sannio (UNISANNIO)
Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie (DST)
The Center’s research programs are mainly focused on structural and functional study of genomes through massive sequencing, related bioinformatics and ‘big-data’ analysis, in order to provide health care systems and the biomedical community, as well as industry, the scientific background and support for the development and spread of Precision Medicine and personalized therapies.
The main fields of research of the infrastructure are generation and analysis of big and complex bio-medical data derived from high-throughput genome, epigenome, transcriptome and metagenome sequencing, with the aim of identifying new information and tools for predictive, preventive and diagnostic medicine, as well as for follow-up observation, in particular in the fileds of cancer, cardiovascular, genetic, infectious and rare diseases.
The main Areas of research carried out in CRGS include:
– Personalized/Precision Medicine Cancer Genetics
– Oncogenomics and Medical and Comparative Genomics Functional Genomics
– Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
The CRGS team comprises talented researchers with strong expertise in Molecular and Clinical Medicine, Genetics, Genomics, Bioinformatics, and Informatics.
The scientific activities of the Center include also advanced training for young researchers, MDs, PhDs and the possibility to organize international PhD programs, as well as master and training courses on technologies and scientific subject relevant to the Center activities.
The Genomics Research Center for Health is fully equipped with cutting-edge technologies for structural and functional studies based on high-throughput genome, epigenome, transcriptome, and metagenome sequencing, providing to the national and international academic and scientific community, as well to industrial partners, a new generation of advanced services of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Expert molecular biologists and bioinformaticians handle all aspects of experimental design, biotechnological implementation and data analysis and safe storage.
The main Core Facilities of the Center include:
– Short and Long Reads Sequencing
– Single Cell Genomics
– Genome Editing
– Bioinformatics and Artificial Intelligence
– Safe short- and long-term storage of genomic and genetic data
